Vape Coils

Vape coils, also known as atomiser heads, are essential in all vape kits. The coil acts like a heating element in a kettle. Resistance wire is wrapped around cotton and encased within a metal outer casing. A power source from your battery sends electrical charge to the coil, heating the coil which vaporises flavoured e-liquid in your tank or pod which produces a vapour you inhale. The vapour in most cases contains nicotine, when heated in your e-cigarette delivers satisfying flavourful vapour to alleviate nicotine cravings.

Vape coils generally last between 7 days to 14 days for most vapers. Various factors can increase or decrease the longevity of a vape coil.

• Vaping frequency – the more you vape, the quicker your coil will burn out
• Length of draw – longer inhales, apply more strain on your coils
• Power output – high wattages will deteriorate coils at a faster rate
• Sweet flavours – sweet e-liquids caramelise and leave debris on the coil
• Heat stress – applying too much heat (high wattages), out of the recommended range for the coil may cause irreversible coil failure

It’s important to note that, coils don’t just stop working, they will still perform by applying heat to vaporise e-liquid. Overtime coils will start to deteriorate and eventually produce a burnt flavour which becomes less pleasurable, and not as satisfying to use.

There are several factors to inform you that you need to switch out your old coils and replace them:

• You experience unpleasant burnt or bitter tastes
• Vapour production is reduced
• Muted flavour production
• You experience frequent dry hits
• Pod or tank starts to leak
• Your vape kit is displaying error messages
• Gurgling or bubbling
• E-Liquid is turning a darker shade

There are several ways you can prolong the life of your vape coils for extended use:

• Prime new coils before use
• Select the right wattage for your coil
• Don’t let your e-liquid levels run low
• Use unsweetened e-liquids
• Use thinner (PG-heavy) e-liquids
• Wait before you take your next puff
• Use premium quality e-liquids

The correct coil choice for your vape kit is determined by which brand of pod or tank you use. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all universal coil, each device uses its own proprietary coils, tanks and pods which are designed for that product and aren’t interchangeable. It’s important to select the right coil for the device you’re using.

Vape coil resistance is measured in “Ω” or “ohms” and determines how much power (wattage) is required to heat the coil to reach your desired vaping temperature.

• High-resistance coils (coils 1Ω and above) allow less electricity current to flow through the circuit
• Low-resistance coils (coils less than 1Ω) allow more electricity current to flow through the circuit

Different types of coils are available to suit various vaping styles.

• High-resistance coils (for example - 1.0Ω, 1.2Ω) compatible with low-wattage vape kits are used for MTL (mouth to lung) vaping
• Low-resistance coils (for example – 0.4Ω, 0.6Ω) compatible with high-wattage vape kits are used for DTL (direct to lung) vaping

The coil resistance you choose is determined by the style of vaping you prefer.

• High-resistance coils (MTL coils), are best suited to beginner vapers as they’re compatible with entry-level vape kits with low wattages. High resistance coils produce discreet clouds, and cooler vapour which feels familiar for ex-smokers.
• Low-resistance coils (DTL coils, Sub ohm coils), are best suited to more experienced vapers as they require an advanced vape kit to reach high wattages. Low resistance coils produce larger clouds, and warmer vapour.

Your new vape coil may taste burnt for a number of reasons:

• You didn’t prime your coil before use
• Your wattage is set too high
• Your e-liquid levels are too low
• You didn’t wait long enough between puffs (chain vaping)
• You may have used the wrong e-liquid
• Your coil isn’t installed properly
• You are using the wrong resistance coil
• You are using low-quality e-liquid

Priming a vape coil means ensuring there’s enough vape juice to fully soak the coil and cotton interior, so it doesn’t burn when heat is applied.

To achieve the best vaping experience and to extend your coils lifespan, it’s important to properly prime your new coils before use.

• Drop e-liquid on the exposed cotton to saturate the wicking material inside the coil
• Attach your new coil to your pod or tank, allowing time for your e-liquid to soak through the cotton
• With the device turned off, take a few weak draws (primer puffs) pulling the e-liquid through the coil
• Turn the device on and turn the wattage down to a low setting and continue to take shallow draws, gradually increasing the power (variable wattage devices only)
• Set your optimal wattage level and vape normally

If you’re looking to mimic cigarette smoking when using e-cigs, we recommend using a 0.6Ω, 0.8Ω, 1.0Ω, or 1.2Ω coils.

• Higher resistance coils (for example – 1.2Ω) will provide a cooler inhale with a discreet amount of vapour
• Lower resistance coils (for example - 0.6Ω) will provide a warmer inhale with a larger amount of vapour

Disposable vapes generally feature a 1.1Ω mesh coil. If you’re looking to replicate the same experience, use a similar resistance rating coil - 1.0Ω or 1.2Ω.
